Of course, I realise that there is no way of comparing these pieces with anything – because the compositions included on Easter Cantatas Of 18th Century Gdańsk are absolutely premiere stuff. No one has recorded it before. So my admiration may also be slightly over the top. But what the heck – this album shows that the First Republic did not stand a bit apart from its richer (as always, unfortunately) and more complacent (as always, also the norm) neighbours. And to think that I once wrote that we were a musical desert. We are not, and kudos to Andrzej Szadejko and the Goldberg Baroque Ensemble for bringing back to us this heritage of past ages.- Classic Sunday
